You have carefully selected the artwork to display in your home or office, thoughtfully considered the frame to house it, and you want it to look great on the wall right?
You probably have thought about how the frame will look in the room, chosen mat colours that compliment the artwork, and patted yourself for being on the right track. You are! There are a few more tips that can help your artwork "sing" on the wall.
I have been working as a Custom Framer for some time and find that the method to hang artwork once it is framed is a commonly misuderstood concept. Really, it can't be too hard, right? You just place a nail in the wall, put the wire across it, then centre the frame & image, right? Close, that is how you handle the hardware--which also needs to be carefully chosen to ensure your piece will stay on the wall--but you need a little more information.
The additional information that you need comes from the following questions:
How does the framed artwork/portrait look with the other items in the room?
How does the proximity (placement) of the artwork relate to other pieces of furniture, windows and doorways?
Does the placement compliment or detract from your carefully chosen frame & artwork?
Consider the eye level that the picture will be viewed at. Will the viewer be looking at the framed image from a seated or standing position?
A couple other questions to ask:
How big is the wall where the picture will hang? Is it small or large?
Is the framed artwork going to be placed directly above a table, couch, or other piece of furniture?
Will the frame be part of a group of framed images?
Return tomorrow, Feb. 16th for a complete answer to this dilemma/question.
Till then, keep creating!
